Hikers Haul
of
Survival
Well I am out and about tomorrow. A friend has asked me to take him out doors for a few days to show him how I do things. He wants me to show him how to live comfortably in a situation with out the comfort of artificial surroundings. So I am going to give him a three day basic survival course. He has seen my blog and he said it has given him a incentive to learn more. He spends a lot of time out doors him self but not in a survival sense and wants to give it a go, He knows i do this sort of thing a lot in my spare time, so i will see if i can give him the basic tools to survive.

Hikers Haul of Survival
Here we are less than three months old as a new Blogg and already we have counted up over six thousand views on Hikers Haul of Survival, even though i have not had a great deal of time to promote it.
When I started Hikers Haul of Survival. I only intended to give tips on Hiking, but i realized how hard it is for people to find out true knowledge of how to survive in a life threatening situation, or by using natures natural resources without having to pay through the nose for the information.
That is why i decided to start up the Hikers Haul of Survival Blogg instead. Here i try to share some of the basics of survival without the mind bending scientific or over exaggerated explanations of so called experts of the practical world in which we live. For thousands of years we lived without the complications of technology and over sights of what we now call a modern world.
Who gave those people the right, who contaminate the world in which we live to gain profit by delivering promises of a artificial environment of misconceived comfort.
Comfort and happiness does not come from materialistic possession or artificial surroundings, but from achievements of good deeds and well being. Do not get me wrong. I am not a pacifist and neither am a fascist, but a realist.
I realize that the human population is growing to a unsustainable strain on this planets resources and one day it will all come to a head .
I have learned for a long time how to live off the land and be able to take care of my self in most conditions that nature has to throw at me.
I have proved to my self I am able to do this through practice and have nothing to prove to any one else. Every one else can take care of them self as far as i am concerned.
I have proved to my self I am able to do this through practice and have nothing to prove to any one else. Every one else can take care of them self as far as i am concerned.
For all those so called survival experts i come across, all i can say is, there is no such thing as a expert in survival as there are no formal qualifications in the subject.
It does not matter how much you know, there is always some thing new to learn.
It does not matter how much you know, there is always some thing new to learn.
If there is one true statement I can make it is this.
If you have the will, the right state of mind, determination and courage, you will survive in most situations you will come across in what ever the future may hold, provided you have the right knowledge to survive.
If you have the will, the right state of mind, determination and courage, you will survive in most situations you will come across in what ever the future may hold, provided you have the right knowledge to survive.
It will take a lot of will power and self discipline. You will eat any thing when you are hungry and i don't mean just fancying a snack, I mean bloody well truly hungry as in starving. That is why you need to learn what is safe and what is not to eat in a uncertain world.
It may never happen in you're life time that you need to use the skills you have learned to survive, but maybe you're kids will be happy you taught them one day in there life time.

Wild Fig
Here is another fresh from the tree I had the opportunity to try
While i was in Cyprus.
Fresh Figs. They were so sweet but not bitter at all and they were
warm from the sun which made a nice subtle difference.
This one I definitely recommend.
Just one thing
Just one thing
I was told that you have to check them for wasp larvae
as there is a certain wasp that will plant there larvae inside of the Fig fruit.
(How much truth is in that I don't know but is is worth looking up), but i just said
oh well Then i get some extra protein with it and he agreed.

Wild Peaches
Here is a wild peach tree. I had the importunity to try these and they are one of the
best things i ever tasted. They were not quite totally ripe but seemed to me, very
sweetly smoother tasting and not as bitter sweet as any i have bought in the UK

Wild Grapes
strait from the vine
strait from the vine
I was in Cyprus recently and got to try some nice fruits strait from the trees and vine. What a opportunity that was. I have to say they do taste a bit different to what we buy in the shops in the UK
Here is one of the fruits i got to try bellow

This is a wild grape vine I came across that was growing in a area next to some buildings. The grapes them self looked more like a goose berry without the slight prickliness, but they tasted sweetly delicious and were warm from the hot sun. Different to what we get in the UK

Rose Hip
Rose Hip
The rose hip pods are what hold the seeds of this plant and it is the pods them self
that are edible. They can be eaten raw in a salad or used in a stir fry.
They can also be used to make jam and wine.

Before using these pod cases they first have to be split open and the
seeds removes and then it is recommended to wash the pod cases that
is the edible part.
I have eaten these raw on occasion and have never come to any harm.
They are as great source of vitamin C and there are no harmful toxins
that are produced by this plant that i know of.

Mountain Ash
also known as Rowan Tree
also known as Rowan Tree
Here is a Mountain Ash. At around September you will find the berries if the Mountain Ash tree
are ripe and ready to pick. The berries have a bitter sweet taste when eaten on there ow but can
be used to make Jam and is quite nice when used in this way.

I also have eaten these berries with other plants
to bulk up a salad when out traveling on foot just
as a energy source.
I have come across a reference from a post that some one made that the berries can cause kidney damage due to the parasorbic acid content. It is the first time i have heard of this so i looked it up.
here is what i have found
The biosynthetic incorporation of [1-14C], [2-14C], and [6-14C]-D-glucose, sodum [1-14C] and [2-14C]-acetate, and sodium [1-14C]malonate into parasorbic acid has been studied by use of ripening rowanberries attached to the tree. The distribution of labelling in parasorbic acid has been investigated by extraction and counting of C-1, C-5, and C-6. Results show that formation by alteration of the oxidation level of glucose, with stereochemical amendment but retention of the integrity and congruence of the chain (as occurs in macrolide carbohydrates), could at most be a minor pathway. An acetate–malonate pathway is supported and there is evidence of ‘starter’ and ‘extender’ effects. Comment is made on the absolute configuration of certain related lactones.
I believe that what this is saying is that there are traces of parasrbic acid but only in small amounts, caused by the natural development of the berries and from changes in climatic temperature

Different Needs
Quick tip
Quick tip
When looking up different wild plants for there uses as food, Medicinal uses, tools or material advantages.
It may be a good idea to look up only the plants that are to be most practical for the you're needs.
This may sound obvious, but i find that some people become confused by trying to take to much on board about the different aspects of wild plants at one time when they first start out learning about subjects such as bush craft and survival..

This may sound obvious, but i find that some people become confused by trying to take to much on board about the different aspects of wild plants at one time when they first start out learning about subjects such as bush craft and survival..
Say for instance if you are only interested in foods for survival should you find you're self in difficulty, then may be you need to look at foods that are going to give you the vitamins and calories you need { energy as in carbohydrates }, and medicinal uses as well as some tools.
If you want to learn about foraging as a hobby then you may want to learn more about what makes a good palatable salad or for example a nice Marsh Mallow to compliment a meal so you can impress friends at a evening dinner party at home.
Not all plants that are good for a survival situation are very pleasant to eat on there own and won't go down well at the dinner table, but will give you energy to get back to safety as where a nice palatable salad may not be fitting in a survival situation but will make a nice garnish at a dinner party.

If you want to learn about bush craft then may be you would be better off learning about how to preserve foods rather than to make a quick meal or salad and how to use plants in a practical sense such as tools and materials like as bindings.
If you are looking in to being a herbalist then may be it is better to specialize in looking up the medicinal purposes of the wild plants around you.
What ever you look to specialize in it is a long and tedious task and a for ever learning process. Never give up learning and remember to respect the need for caution and safety as you learn.

The common Chick Weed
Common Chick Weed
This is the common chick weed. It has a refreshing flavour and can be used in salads
or as a garnish to help make a meal that bit more interesting. It was introduced to the
UK by the Victorians and was grown for the table but soon became a nuisance and
is now considered to be a weed and in many cases a pest, but is really
pleasant to the pallet.

The difference between Bush Craft and Survival.
Some thing that I have noticed about bush craft and survival.
Some people have a misconception between the two and I would like to just point out the difference to those of you who are new to this sort of thing.
Bush craft is knowing you're environment and what is on offer from the natural environment that is around you, how to utilise the resources that are on offer from nature it's self. From foods to medicines and tools that may be Gathered, Prepared, Preserved and Stored.
Survival is about being in a life threatening situation situation where you find you're self trying get back to civilisation with you're life from either a natural or man made environment by using what ever resources and means are at hand, whether it is natural or man made.
Hikers Haul of Survival

Its nice to see all the big a flashy photographic equipment that is on offer, But if you're not a serious photographer and just like to take quick snaps of you're daily events then I find that the LG 360 mobile phone is great for just that. It has a 5.0 megapixel camera so is great for a decent bit of video footage as well and hey guess what, you get to phone you're loved ones with it to and only cost me around £49.00 at Tesco.
The good points are it is small, compact and the battery life is around three to five days depending on how you use it.
Not so good is the camera does not zoom but can be zoomed when transferred to PC or other due to good 5.0 mega pixelation, but video can be zoomed and it is not waterproof.
Happy Snapping
Dactacort
Remember. when you are out and about. It is you're feet that get you from A to B so take care of them. Before going on a walk just take time to check them. Make sure they are well, without any signs of fungal infection. If you notice any athletes foot try some Daktacort, It is great for foot fungal infections, but be aware that it is a steroid based treatment, so consult you're chemist before using it.
I tried it once and it cleared my feet up in no time.
Always remember. When you go out and about to do a bit of hiking. Take some warm dry kit with you and some water proofs, even in the summer as you never know what is round the corner. Check the weather forecast. You can do this on the radio, TV and in the news papers.
Before leaving try to get some local knowledge on the weather for the area you are walking. You can't beat the local knowledge as far as the weather goes, but remember, know matter how much information you gather you can never be 100% sure of what is round the corner so use a bit of common sense and try to find a happy medium. Be prepared if not for the worst, at least for the better.
Stay safe.
A great example of how dangerous it can be for wild campers who set up to close to these crags.
Also bear in mind that these rocks have fallen on melting snow that is around a average depth of six to eight inches. so just imagine how far the rocks will travel when there is no snow.
{How far does a penny role when you drop it}.
This Image is my own, I reserve all Copy Rights
If there were a person standing at these fallen rocks you would be able to see just how far they had fallen.
When I took this picture I estimated it to be at least a good 40 meter.
